Anora, a young Brooklyn sex worker, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. When word reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when her parents travel to New York to have the marriage annulled. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian presents short reviews of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, strangely erotic Misericordia. At a Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker would act out various sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to demonstrate what he wanted the actors to do. It’s hard to watch movies where the main characters make stupid, bad decisions. In this movie, a young stripper falls for a rich Russian kid who is clearly, CLEARLY not who he says he is. The sex worker would know INSTANTLY that this guy is trouble. Yet the entire story hinges on her devotion to this obvious con artist. The film has a ton of great energy, and the performances are always fully committed. But the film itself feels flimsy and irrelevant, the gritty realism of the film’s style constantly undermined by the implausible “movie logic” of the plot. Plus, the big “twist” is announced very early on—and when it does arrive, the writer/director does absolutely nothing with it.
