Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), was once a great Hollywood star, but she’s 50 years old and hosts a home workout TV show, but it’s a bit dated and horrible producer Harvey (Dennis Quaid) decides he needs a younger star.
Sue is now a star, but she is tempted to extend the week
After being in a car crash, Elisabeth learns about a new unofficial procedure called Substance, which allows a younger self to emerge from your body in the privacy of your apartment. Now there are two of them, but they are still one in a way and have to switch places every seven days. Sue (Margaret Qualley) has a natural charm and girlish beauty, she gets Elisabeth’s old job in an open casting call. This violation of the Faustian contract has consequences, suspension of disbelief regarding the substance used and the processes involved comes easily. The film’s flaws (yes, there are) lie in being maybe 10 minutes too long and a completely over-the-top grand Guignol finale sequence, but even this is salvageable as it pays homage to many horror and science fiction films. With some truly amazing make-up and prosthetics applied, you’re convinced that Sue will emerge from Elisabeth and that other bodily changes have taken place. Great acting from Moore, Qualley and Quaid, with visual metaphorical references to what’s happening and close-ups used to deadly effect. This is not a movie for the squeamish or the faint of heart, but it is a great Body Horror/Black Comedy/Satire.
